Title:
The Amazing Bud Powell - Volume 1
Personnel: Bud Powell (piano), Fats
Navarro (trumpet), Sonny Rollins (tenor sax), Tommy Potter (bass),
Roy Haynes (drums).
Recorded: 1949 & 1951
Label: Blue Note
Comments: One of the originators of be-bop,
Bud Powell's contribution to jazz piano cannot be given enough
weight. Along with Art Tatum and Nat King Cole (as a pianist),
Powell's playing was instrumental in taking jazz to a whole new
level in the early 40's. And his compositions were just simply
ahead of his time in harmonic sophistication and rhythmic elegance
(see "Un Poco Loco" as a superb example). His musical
vocabulary has informed every single jazz pianist who has followed
him.

Title:
Time Waits
Personnel: Bud Powell (piano), Sam Jones
(bass), Philly Joe Jones (drums).
Recorded: 1958
Label: Blue Note
Comments: Although Powell's dexterity
deteriorated near the end of his career, this CD is still a great
example of his superb trio playing. Especially note Philly Joe's
unbelievable brush work throughout the recording.

Title:
Bud Powell - Jazz Giant
Personnel: Bud Powell (piano) +
various...
Recorded: 1949 - 1960
Label: Blue Note
Comments: After moving to Paris in the
late 50's, Bud still performed, although less regularly. His mental
health was deteriorating and it was harder and harder for him
to keep his commitments. Nonetheless, his genius burns through
all the excess noise that he must have been listening to running
through his head.
