Title:
The Dark Keys
Personnel: Branford Marsalis (tenor
and soprano sax), Kenny Garrett (alto sax), Joe Lovano (tenor
sax), Reginald Veal (bass), Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums).
Recorded: 1996
Label: Sony/Columbia
Comments: Branford Marsalis, the brother
of Wynton Marsalis, is simply one of the most important tenor
saxophonists of our time. His style is complicated and involved,
and his music is challenging. At the same time, his sound is coming
out of the tradition, in particular Sonny Rollins, and he's always
swinging. Best known by the general public for his short stint
on the Tonight Show in the 90's, he performs around the world
with his groups, almost always using "Tain" Watts on
drums - his friend from his earlier days in New Orleans.

Title:
Renaissance
Personnel: Branford Marsalis (tenor
and soprano sax), Kenny Kirkland (piano), Charnett Moffett (bass),
Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums).
Recorded: 1987
Label: Sony/Columbia
Comments: This group performed together
for many years, until the recent death of Kenny Kirkland. Renaissance
is a super CD jam-packed with challenging music and super interesting
compositions.

Title:
Wynton Marsalis - Black Codes (From The Underground)
Personnel: Branford Marsalis (tenor
and soprano sax), Kenny Kirkland (piano), Ron Carter, Charnett
Moffett (bass), Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums).
Recorded: 1985
Label: Sony/Columbia
Comments: During the mid-80's, the Marsalis
brothers put together this band which toured around the world.
This CD is the high-light of that era, highly acclaimed for it's
unique approach to ensemble playing. After Black Codes,
the band separated and Wynton began to explore the more traditional
roots of jazz that existed before the 1970's. Branford, meanwhile,
has continued to innovate, moving his music forward with new and
exciting recordings each year.
