Title:
Way Out!
Personnel: Johnny Griffin (tenor
sax), Kenny Drew (piano), Wilbur Ware (bass), Philly Joe Jones
(drums).
Recorded: 1958
Label: Prestige
Comments: Johnny Griffin, originally
from Chicago, first made a name for himself in the 1950's on these
Blue Note releases. As "Grif" lives in France
these days, his unique sound, slippery yet precise, can only be
heard periodically when he visits the states. A must see when
he's in town; at least we have these CD's even if we can't catch
him live.

Title:
Woe Is Me
Personnel: Johnny Griffin (tenor
sax). Michael Weiss (piano), John Webber (bass), Kenny Washington
(drums).
Recorded: 1999
Label: Prestige
Comments: This band has been together
for over ten years, and you can tell when you hear them. The crisp,
clean drumming of Kenny Washington is a perfect complement to
Griffin's soulful delivery. And John Webber and Michael
Weiss are staple players on the current New York jazz scene.
