Title:
Jazz At Massey Hall
Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet),
Charlie Parker (alto sax), Bud Powell (piano), Max Roach (drums),
Charles Mingus (bass).
Recorded: 1953
Label: Verve
Comments: Sometimes called, "The
Greatest Concert," this recording of the pioneers of be-bop
is an incredibly important one. Ten years into the be-bop revolution
in 1953, the fact that all the major innovators reunited for this
concert is amazing in and of itself. Also, the fact that
Mingus took the tapes from the recording and over-dubbed new bass
solos because he didn't like the ones from the concert is incredible
as well!

Title:
Birks Works: The Verve Big Band Sessions
Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet),
Phil Woods, Ernie Henry (alto sax), Lee Morgan, Quincy Jones (trumpet),
Al Grey (trombone), Walter Davis, Jr., Wynton Kelly (piano), Charlie
Persip (drums).
Recorded: 1950's
Label: Verve
Comments: Dizzy's big bands of the 50's
and 60's - WOW! Simply amazing music. Especially check out the
young phenomenon - Lee Morgan. At 17, Lee's sound is already completely
developed, sounding just like he would 15 years later. And of
course, the inimitable Dizzy Gillespie. Every jazz musician has
his influences, and Dizzy's was Roy Eldridge. Although Louis Armstrong
was already a national treasure in the late 30's and early 40's,
Dizzy claims to have not owned one Louis album when he was growing
up. Roy Eldridge was his man!

Title:
Original Mambo Kings
Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet),
Charlie Parker (alto sax), Machito and his Orchestra.
Recorded: 1948-54
Label: Verve
Comments: Although not specifically
a Dizzy Gillespie CD, this recording has incredible music on it,
combining the new musicians of be-bop with the Afro-Cuban sounds
from Cuba. The songs with Dizzy and Charlie Parker backed up by
Machito's bands are simply incredible.
