Title:
Hamp and Getz
Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor sax),
Lionel Hampton (vibes), Lou Levy (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass),
Shelly Manne (drums).
Recorded: 1955
Label: Verve
Comments: Unbeknownst to most Stan
Getz fans, the saxophonist was a highly respected be-bop player
in the '50's before he struck it rich in the popular world of
Bossa Nova in the 1960's. On this recording, Stan shows off his
amazing chops, especially on the burner, "Cherokee."

Title:
Getz and Gilberto (Remastered)
Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor sax),
Antonio Carlos Jobim (piano), Joao Gilberto (guitar and vocals),
Tommy Williams (bass), Milton Banana (drums), Astrud Gilberto
(vocals).
Recorded: 1963
Label: Verve
Comments: Ah, the soothing sounds
of Bossa Nova from Brazil, by way of Stan Getz. A world phenomenon
in the 1960's, the silky sounds of Stan's horn are showcased avidly
on this recording, a great CD to own if you've never heard Bossa
Nova.

Title:
Serenity
Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor sax),
Kenny Baron (piano), Rufus Reid (bass), Victor Lewis (drums).
Recorded: 1987
Label: Verve
Comments: Stan's career spanned
five decades and has influenced many a horn player. Himself a
Lester Young groupie in the 1940's, Stan's sound remained unique
throughout his life. After a few bars, musicians can identify
his playing by his sound - silky, yet with a crinkle to it. This
recording documents one of his later bands, with the outstanding
pianist, Kenny Baron, and drummer, Victor Lewis, swinging away
in support of Stan.
