Title:
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Night At Birdland
- Vol 1
Personnel: Art Blakey (drums), Clifford
Brown (trumpet), Lou Donaldson (alto sax), Horace Silver (piano),
Curly Russell (bass).
Recorded: 1954
Label: Blue Note
Comments: In effect, any Art Blakey record
on Blue Note is a classic. We have chosen a sampling of three
here, all highlighting different players that moved through the
great drummer's band. Blakey, also known for his Muslim name,
Buhaina, has a unique place in jazz history as the foremost "proving
ground" for young up and coming players. His bands provided
a jazz "laboratory" setting where his musical directors
could write specifically for the band, thus spawning some of the
great original tunes of jazz, such as "Along Came Betty",
by Benny Golson, "Moanin'" by Bobby Timmons, and "Lester
Left Town," by Wayne Shorter.
