No one had ever made the trumpet sound like that before, let alone used that type of phrasing. As with any great artist, though, Louis did have a predecessor and teacher, more or less. His experience as second trumpet in the band of King Oliver, the great trumpet player, laid the groundwork for his awe-inspiring career. Oliver is one of the only musicians Louis talked about with any great reverence. |
