Title:
Complete Hot Five and Seven Recordings (Box Set)
Personnel: Various: Louis Armstrong
(trumpet), Kid Ory (trombone), Johnny Dodds (clarinet), Lil Armstrong
(piano), Johnny St. Cyr (Banjo), Baby Dodds (Drums)...
Recorded: 1925-27
Label: Sony/Columbia
Comments: These early recordings of Louis
are a testament to what a "freak" Louis was on the trumpet.
No one had ever made the trumpet sound like that before,
let alone used that type of phrasing. As with any great
artist, though, Louis did have a predecessor and teacher,
more or less. His experience as second trumpet in the band of
King Oliver, the great trumpet player, laid the groundwork for
his awe-inspiring career. Oliver is one of the only musicians
Louis talked about with any great reverence.

Title:
The Great Summit - The Complete Sessions: Louie and Duke
Personnel: Louie (trumpet/vocals),
Trummy Young (trombone), Barney Bigard (clarinet), Duke Ellington
(piano), Mort Herbert (bass), Danny Barcelona (drums)
Recorded: 1961
Label: Blue Note
Comments: By this time in his career,
Louis' greatness had been appreciated for almost 40 years and
he was a huge star. This document of his collaboration with Duke
cannot be missed, as the artistry of these two "giants of
jazz" is undeniably some of America's greatest contributions
to 20th century culture.
